Uruguay reinforces measures on the border with Brazil due to Covid-19 outbreak

The President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, announced on Monday 25 the reinforcement of the sanitary measures to monitor the coronavirus on the border with Brazil, where there was an outbreak of Covid-19 that caused two deaths this weekend.

At a news conference, the president said he spoke in the morning with his Brazilian colleague, Jair Bolsonaro, to put into practice an existing binational health action treaty. "We have gathered the approval of the Brazilian president to apply this treaty and, in the next few hours, we will put it into practice," he said, adding that there is "reciprocal concern with what is happening on the border".

Lacalle Pou also informed that the ministries of Interior and Defense will add two migratory and health posts to the two already existing at border points to minimize traffic to and from the capital of the department of the same name. In addition, the start of classes in the city was suspended, scheduled for the 1st and 15th of June, and an increase in health resources, such as ambulances and intensive care beds, was ordered.

Uruguay has 769 confirmed cases of coronavirus, with 22 deaths. At the weekend, there was the first death in Rivera, a city on the border with Santana do Livramento, in Rio Grande do Sul.

The measures are "focused on respect for binational life, but at the same time trying to ensure that outbreaks of contagion do not migrate from Rivera to the rest of the country," said Lacalle Pou. The president also informed that inspections will be carried out in local stores, and that 1,100 random tests will be carried out in the city to measure the number of infected people.

Of the 18 new cases of the disease computed on Monday in the country, 17 were in Riviera, which has 29 infected in all. The last two Covid-19 deaths recorded in Uruguay occurred in that city on Saturday.

Uruguay has the coronavirus epidemic under “relative control,” according to experts who advise the government. However, the border is the Achilles' heel, as the passage through cities bordering Brazil remains open to residents of both countries due to the “binational” character of these locations.
