An unprecedented 3.28 million people last week applied for unemployment benefits in the United States, compared with the 282,000 claims registered the previous week, the Department of Labor reported today.
The increase, due to the closure of numerous activities in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, surpassed the historical record of 695,000 orders in 1982.
In the United States, the weekly average of claims for unemployment benefits is 217,000 claims – more than 15 times less than this week. The worst record was for October 1982, when the number of orders in one of the weeks reached 695 thousand, writes the Public.
Hospitality and catering are among the sectors most affected, but the effects of the pandemic are also being felt in health and social assistance services, culture, entertainment and recreational activities, as well as transport, domestic service and manufacturing industries.
100 more dead in New York State
The death toll from the new coronavirus in New York State, the epicenter of the epidemic in the United States, has risen sharply in the last 24 hours with 100 more victims, out of a total of 385 registered since the pandemic began, an official source said.
This morning, the state of New York, with about 20 million inhabitants, registered 37,000 confirmed cases of covid-19, against more than 30,000 on Wednesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo said at a press conference.
"What happened was that people had a (artificial) respirator in the hospitals," said the governor. “The longer they stay with a respirator, the more the likelihood of a tragic outcome increases. At the moment, there are people who have had a respirator for 20, 30 days ”.
However, he repeated that the State has enough respirators for immediate needs, even if new devices are needed soon. The death toll in the United States from the new coronavirus exceeded 1,000 on Wednesday night.
The USA, which at first observed the spread of the epidemic from afar in China and then in Europe, is close to overtaking Italy in the number of cases caused by the disease.
New York State currently concentrates about half of the cases across the United States, about 70,000 at noon today, according to John Hopkins University.
