The United States government announced on Sunday, 31, that it will send to Brazil two million doses of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) to help in the treatment of Brazilian patients infected with the new coronavirus. Americans are also going to send a thousand respirators to the country. The agreement, however, goes against the World Health Organization (WHO) and doctors, who do not recommend the use of the drug to combat Covid-19.
According to the Ministry of Health bulletin on Sunday, there are already 514,849 confirmed cases in Brazil, an increase of 16,409 in the last 24 hours. The total number of deaths from the disease is 29,314, 480 more than yesterday to today.
In a note, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil spoke about the cooperation of the United States. "The Brazilian people and the North American people show solidarity in the fight against the coronavirus". “HCQ will be used as a prophylactic to help defend nurses, doctors and health professionals in Brazil against the virus. It will also be used to treat infected Brazilians, ”he added.
Last Saturday, the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) recommended to the Ministry of Health the suspension of guidance for the use of hydroxychloroquine in patients with coronavirus. The WHO has also suspended the use of the drug in research that the organization led with scientists from 100 countries. The measure was taken for safety because there is still no effectiveness in the treatment and increases the risk of death.
